Who was the first all American athlete at the University of Florida?
I wondered who was the first American athlete UF was it. I can not find any information on this topic.
We join the NCAA instead of the AIAW in 1982. I would say that Tracy Caulkins in swimming since she was an All-American swimmer in 1982. Ann Woods was our first NCAA gymnast AA in 1982.

Knute Rockne All American [VHS] $19.98 Long before Rocky Balboa went the distance, there was the original Rock–as in Knute Rockne. His story, a classic 1940 biopic, combines vintage gridiron action with heart-tugging sentiment. Yup, this is the film with the famous halftime pep talk and Ronald Reagan’s “win just one for the Gipper” deathbed plea. Yeah, it’s corny. But so what. Jim Thorpe: All American [VHS] $13.95 This reverential, well-crafted 1951 biopic starring the hulky Burt Lancaster as Native American Olympian Thorpe is hardly the definitive word on one of our greatest track stars, but it does remind us how unfair and demeaning it once was for athletes of color. Jim Thorpe – All American $17.96 Burt Lancaster stars as Jim Thorpe, the Native American sports whiz whom many consider the greatest athlete of the 20th century. We first see Thorpe as a child on the reservation, highly resistant to the notion of going to school. He proves to be an excellent student, eventually attending the all-Indian college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Still, Thorpe doesn’t feel like mixing much with the other students until coach Charles Bickford encourages the lad to go out for the track team. Thorpe finds that he can be more articulate as an athlete than as a scholar, and soon excels at all school sports. He also marries his college sweetheart, non-Indian Phyllis Thaxter. After graduation, Thorpe tries to get a coaching job, but is frozen out by the white establishment. Determined to make a name for himself, he enters the 1912 Olympics at Stockholm, where he earns more gold medals than anyone else and is praised as the world’s greatest athlete by the King of Sweden. Unfortunately, the fact that Thorpe briefly played semi-professional baseball while attending Carlisle costs him his amateur status–and every one of his medals. Things go from bad to worse for Thorpe after this; his son dies, his marriage disintegrates, and he crawls into a bottle. Thorpe has hit rock bottom when he is reunited with his old coach Bickford, who offers Jim a ticket to the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. It is the first small step on the road to regeneration for Jim Thorpe (alas, real life was not so kind; Thorpe died in near-poverty, and it was not until years after his death that his Olympic medals were restored). Jim Thorpe, All American was directed by Michael Curtiz, who previously had secured small acting roles for the real Thorpe in such films as Knute Rockne: All American (1940). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Knute Rockne All American $16.96 Knute Rockne-All American was Pat O’Brien’s finest hour: thanks to intensive rehearsals and numerous makeup applications, he so closely resembled the title character that, in the words of Rockne’s widow, I almost expected him to make love with me. The life of the legendary Notre Dame football coach is recounted from his childhood, when young Rockne (played by Johnny Sheffield) startles his Norwegian-immigrant parents by announcing at the dinner table that he’s just been introduced to the most wonderful game of the world. As an adult, Rockne works his way through Indiana’s Notre Dame university, under the watchful and benevolent eye of Father Callahan (Donald Crisp) A brilliant student, Rockne is urged by Father Nieuwland (Albert Basserman) to become a chemist, or at the very least remain a chemistry teacher. Newly married to Bonnie Skilles (Gale Page), Rockne at first sticks to academics, but the call of the gridiron is too loud for him to ignore, and before long he has built his reputation as the winningest college football coach in America. One of his most significant contributions to the game is the invention of the tactical shift, inspired by the precision choreography of a team of nightclub dancers! Among the players nurtured by Rockne are the immortal Four Horsemen-Miller (William Marshall), Stuhlreder (Harry Lukats), Laydon (Kane Richmond) and Crowley (William Byrne), and of course the tragic George Gipp, superbly enacted by Ronald Reagan. His career continues unabated until his death in a plane crash in 1931. The screenplay of Knute Rockne-All American tends to be all highlights and little story, with several of the more dramatic passages telegraphed well in advance (just before her husband’s death, Bonnie Rockne comments forebodingly It’s gotten cold all of a sudden). Still, the film remains one of the best and most inspirational sports biographies ever made, with a heart-wrenching conclusion guaranteed to moisten the eyes of even the most jaundiced viewer. Ironically, the film’s most famous scene, George Gipp’s deathbed admonition to Win one for the Gipper, was for many years excised from all TV prints due to a legal entanglement stemming from an earlier radio dramatization of Rockne’s life; fortunately, this and several related scenes were restored to the film in the early 1990s. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

Quiet American $12.71 The Quiet American was the first major American-financed film to touch upon the powder-keg situation in Vietnam (still referred to as Indochina in 1958). Audie Murphy plays an enigmatic American who comes to Saigon, ostensibly on an economic mission. He meets an embittered journalist (Michael Redgrave) who is living with an Indochinese girl (Giorgia Moll). The American falls for the girl and promises to marry her. In retaliation, the reporter tells the communists that the American GI’s economist stance is a cover, and that he is actually selling munitions to non-communist troops. Graham Greene had intended his novel The Quiet American to be an attack against American influence in Southeast Asia. Producer/director/adapter Joseph L. Mankiewicz would have none of that, so he changed the ending into a pro-Yankee tract — thereby killing any impact the film might have had. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

It’s All True $13.46 Both a documentary and a unique exercise in film restoration, It’s All True tells the complex story of Orson Welles’ ill-fated attempts to make an anthology film about the life and culture of South America and concludes with a reconstruction of one of Welles’ unfinished segments, edited together from rediscovered original footage. The idea for Welles’ South American project was conceived by the American government as a sort of cultural exchange to improve relations with Latin America. Using interviews and period footage, the filmmakers relate how the project quickly turned sour, as both the Brazilian government and RKO studio executives objected to Welles early footage; indeed, thanks to a local witch doctor, the film could literally be said to be cursed. Although Welles persevered, RKO eventually withdrew support from the project. The failures of It’s All True and The Magnificent Ambersons, which was damaged by studio cuts made while Welles was overseas, are thought by many to have irreparably damaged the director’s Hollywood career. It’s All True concludes with a partial reconstruction of the Four Men on a Raft segment, in which Welles tells the true story of a dramatic, thousand-mile raft journey by four Brazilian peasants. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide |

This allows you to have stronger, much more intense workouts. Kre-Alkalyn EFX is the best way to supercharge your ATP levels and grow, grow, grow. Best of all, there are no side effects. American Values, American Wilderness $15.26 Explore the values of wilderness along with the people who have truly come to appreciate the many benefits of the planet’s natural beauty in an inspirational documentary from filmmaker Christopher Barns. Few things can inspire quite so much as the majesty of mother nature’s glory, and as an eclectic group of Americans including a Native American tribal chairman, a cancer survivor, a children’s book author, and the late film star Christopher Reeve all discuss just how the rolling hills and awe-inspiring beauty of the land have influenced their values, images of the very landscapes that captured their hearts offer viewers the rare opportunity to truly get back in touch with nature in an increasingly modernized world. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

And Justice for All $11.66 Norman Jewison’s blackly satirical look at the American justice system has gained in stature as one of the more incisive social commentaries of its time. Al Pacino plays Arthur Kirkland, an incorruptible attorney who attempts to initiate reforms in the Maryland justice system. Kirkland is haunted by the fates of two past clients, one of whom committed suicide in jail; the other is still alive but is locked up on a trumped-up traffic violation. The ability of power and money to distort the pursuit of justice becomes all too clear as Kirkland finds out how deeply the rot has spread. He finally retaliates by representing a repulsive judge (John Forsythe) accused of rape. Pacino’s and Forsythe’s performances are intense and powerful. Many critics found the film biting and almost painful in its razor-sharp indictment of the justice system, while others declared the script too outrageous. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide |

American Pastime $7.99 American Pastime tells a poignant story set against the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. Built to house Japanese-American citizens whose loyalties stood questioned by the pressures of war, these camps created many hardships for their internees. Rounded up and uprooted from their everyday lives, they remained loyal to the United States and ironically turned to that most American of sports – baseball – as a way to deal with their plight.Based on true events, the film stars Gary Cole (Talladega Nights, Dodgeball, TV’s The West Wing) as a minor-leaguer and guard at the Topaz Internment Camp that, amidst all the conflict, is hoping for one last shot at the Major Leagues. Directed and co-written by the writer of American Me, the cast also includes Leonardo Nam (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) and Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite). |

AMERICAN ASSASSIN $17.96 The documentary American Assassin: Lee Harvey Oswald Behind The Iron Curtain capitalizes on a little-known series of episodes tied to Kennedy assassin Oswald’s activity in the late 1950s. In 1959, it seems, American Marine Oswald defected to Minsk, Russia, where he participated in a shady and clandestine series of Cold War activities, then promptly fled Soviet shores. American Assassin utilizes extensive footage, shot in Minsk, to help relay this seldom-told story – and thus sheds a new and disturbing light on the events that transpired in Dallas in November 1963. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide perspective -THE RUSSIAN PERSPECTIVE.Source: Ryko Distribution |

American Nightmare $21.21 In the late ’60s, the tone of American horror films began to shift in the wake of the startling success of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead — horror films became gorier, bleaker, and began to subtly reflect the political and social upheaval gripping the country. Through the ’70s and ’80s, films like Last House on the Left, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween held a distorted mirror up to American culture, reflecting its fear and chaos in the wake of Vietnam and Watergate. The American Nightmare is a documentary that looks at the transgressive horror films of the ’60s and ’70s and the people who made them. Directors Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, and David Cronenberg, special effects man Tom Savini, and film critics Tom Gunning and Adam Lowenstein are among those interviewed by director Adam Simon. The American Nightmare was produced for the premium cable outlet The Independent Film Channel. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |
